Welcome to Terreiro de Ògún

The word Terreiro comes from the Brazilian Portuguese language and originally refers to an open yard or cleared ground attached to a home or community space. In Afro Brazilian contexts, the term was adopted to name the places where African and Indigenous peoples in Brazil gathered to resist and preserve their spiritual practices, cultural traditions, and communal life. Over time, terreiro came to signify not just a physical space, but a recognised religious and cultural community rooted in ancestry, continuity, and collective identity.

Terreiro de Ògún (Ègbé tí Òyìnbó Ọmọ Òrìṣà Ògún) Inc.

Terreiro de Ògún is an Afro Brazilian cultural and religious community based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia.
We are part of the Candomblé tradition, which preserves ancestral knowledge, ritual practice, and community care rooted in West African and Afro Brazilian Indigenous heritage.

Our work combines spiritual practice, cultural education, and community support. We provide a safe and respectful space for people seeking guidance, cultural connection, learning, and collective wellbeing, while also supporting wider community initiatives focused on dignity, inclusion, and mutual aid.

The Terreiro operates as a not for profit organisation, guided by tradition, ethical responsibility, and service to the community. Participation is open to those who approach with respect, and engagement may take the form of cultural activities, educational programs, community projects, or spiritual consultations by appointment.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which our Terreiro stands, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation.

We honour their elders past and present, and all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the true custodians of this land.

As a house rooted in ancestral reverence, we recognise the deep spiritual connection First Nations people have with country, spirit, and ancestry and we walk in solidarity with their ongoing fight for land, justice, and cultural survival.

We commit to cultural respect, care for country, and standing against all forms of erasure and colonial violence.

This Terreiro operates with deep respect for all sacred lineages that have survived despite oppression.
