About Terreiro de Ògún
WHAT IS CANDOMBLÉ?
Candomblé is an Afro Brazilian religion and cultural system that developed in Brazil from the forced displacement of African peoples during the transatlantic slave trade. Many of those taken to Brazil came from regions of West Africa, including Yoruba speaking territories, and carried with them their spiritual knowledge, rituals, languages, and worldviews.
In Brazil, African traditions were preserved and transformed through resilience and resistance. These traditions came into contact with Indigenous Brazilian cultures and local realities, forming distinct Afro Brazilian religious expressions such as Candomblé. Central to Candomblé is the veneration of the Òrìṣà, ancestral forces of nature that represent ethical principles, human qualities, and natural elements.
Candomblé is not a belief system based on conversion. It is a lived tradition rooted in ancestry, community, ritual practice, and continuity. Each Terreiro maintains lineage based knowledge passed down through generations, preserving cultural memory, identity, and spiritual practice.
WHAT WE DO
At Terreiro de Ògún, our work centres on spiritual practice, cultural education, and community support within the Candomblé tradition.
Our spiritual activities include rituals, offerings, and consultations guided by ancestral knowledge. One of the core practices is Èrìndìlógún, also known as Jogo de Búzios, a traditional divination system using cowrie shells. This practice is used to understand a person’s Odù, which reflects patterns of life, challenges, strengths, and areas requiring balance or guidance.
Through spiritual consultation, ritual work, and ethical guidance, we support individuals in understanding their life paths, restoring balance, and strengthening personal responsibility. The focus is not prediction, but alignment, reflection, and care.
Alongside spiritual practices, the Terreiro facilitates cultural education, community gatherings, and support initiatives. These activities are carried out respectfully, transparently, and in accordance with Australian law, with an emphasis on wellbeing, inclusion, and cultural integrity.
WHY WE DO IT
The work of Terreiro de Ògún exists to honour ancestry, preserve cultural knowledge, and strengthen community bonds.
Candomblé traditions survived centuries of persecution through collective care and mutual support. We continue this legacy by creating a space where ancestral memory is respected and transmitted responsibly to future generations.
Our vision is grounded in values of dignity, respect, responsibility, and solidarity. We believe spiritual and cultural practices should contribute positively to the wider community, supporting emotional wellbeing, social connection, and cultural understanding.
By sharing knowledge, offering support, and encouraging community participation, we uphold a tradition where growth is collective, care is shared, and no one walks alone. This work is not only about spiritual continuity, but about building a respectful, supportive, and inclusive community for all who engage with us
